Summary of Curriculum

The curriculum, as stipulated in the Academy Regulation, is to "€œtrain elite officers of the Army equipped with intellectual comptence required for execution of duty and for continuous development, upright value, strong mind, establish a sense of value in the state based on liberal democracy and to cultivate leadership and military spirit of devotion for the nation."
The curriculum is comprised of structure and subjects to effectively achieve the educational goals and in particular, the bachelor's degree course as well as the characteristics of a special purpose university has simultaneously been reflected in order to enhance the aptitude and quality required in continuous development as a regular officer. The curriculum has been organized with the following items as fundamental principles.

First, KMA, as a special purpose university with the purpose of fostering elite officers of the Army, shall focus on cultivating academic studies and technology to cadets at the same time assisting cadets to be equipped with qualities and personality as a commissioned officer.

Second, it shall respond effectively to the changing social education environment. From this aspect, the introduction of English, emphasis on computer education and differentiated education per subject following the informatization of the society, global trend and changes in high school curriculum is part of such initiative.

Third, the basic science skills have to be fostered to engage in information-war and science-war considering the future war conditions. Lastly, the curriculum has to satisfy the conditions of military studies degree selected as a measure for establishing the specialized professionalism of the Army.

The distinctive features of the education curriculum which has been constituted under such principles can be summarized in a few points as below.
"€œOriented towards extensive undergraduate studies system"€
Korea Military Academy emphasizes on comprehensive academic studies of a university rather than education restricted to certain majors or academic fields.
The global trend of academic studies includes extensive basic liberal arts education with focus on democratic citizen education. It is important for the curriculum to prepare the foundation of citizen education required in the social life by cultivating character, morality and creativity. Therefore, KMA's curriculum offers a broad spectrum of liberal arts subjects which cadets can complete. In addition, considering the aspect that KMA is a special purpose university that aims to foster elite military specialist, it is compulsory for cadets to undertake various military studies subjects.
"€œEmphasis on Character Development"
Character Development is conducted on top of all other education to cultivate the set of sound values, virtuous character and clear soldierly mind necessary to dedicate one's lift as a solder devoted to the country and its people.
Character Development fosters virtuous character, personality, sound value and moral discernment in cadets destined to become the bulwark of the state and by promoting the indomitable soldierly spirit and firm job ethics, cadets would be equipped with clear patriotism towards the country and the people, furthermore, have a firm view of state based on liberal democratic mind. Character Development is comprised of Character Education, Moral Education, Regulation Education, Mind Education, ethical education of the army, training, general studies, physical education, religious activities and extracurricular activities. Besides, special activities and out of class activities are conducted simultaneously to foster artistic sense and insight such as music and literature.
"Integrated Education of the 3 service academis"€
As a Stage 1 Course of a joint academy education system, there will be a joint education of the Army, Navy and Air Force Cademies from 2012. This combined education is conducted to increase the togetherness and cooperation of cadets while acquiring baisc military knowledge with regards to the Army and is for the freshman year.
The Army-Navy-Air Force Military Academy Integrated Education is held on the 2nd semester of the Freshmen year which is divided into 3 combined groups of the Army-Navy-Air Force Military Academy Cadets. They are circulated and educated in each academy. In addition, the sophomores, juniors and seniors are subject to enhancement of understanding other armies by reflecting the joint education contents in relevant curricular subjects. Special lecturers by specialists from other armies are offered and by jointly operating integrated educational events and programs, an integrated military education system pursuing professionalism and diversity is in place.
"€œEnglish-centered and information-based education"€
KMA's educational curriculum focuses on enhancing English profiency and computer utilizing skills to meet the demands of the globalization and information-based society and to counteract actively against future war enviroment.
As for English, 12 credits in total have to be completed in English conversation, exposition, military English and others and as for computer, 8 credits in total have to be completed in Introduction to computer, computer network, programming and others. Besides, cadets are given the opportunity to enhance the English proficiency through English familiarization education. Sophomore cadets undergo concentrated English education during the seasonal semesters (5~6 weeks) and during this period, cadets have to spend the time in a separate space and only use English. Through all of these courses, all cadets have to acquire Grade 2 and above in TEPS (700 points in TOEIC) before the 1st semester of Junior and in case of computing, 600 points and above have to be acquired in PCT.
"€œDiversification of academic major education"
Various major courses have been established to satisfy the Army's demand in various professional fields.
Liberal arts curriculum is comprised of 6 majors in total including regional research (English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Russian), economics, leadership, military history, international relations and business administration. On the other hand, Natural Sciences curriculum is comprised of 8 courses including operation analysis, applied physics, applied chemistry, electronic engineering, information science, civil and environmental engineering, weapon system engineering and mechanical engineering. The diversification of academic major course is to expand the opportunity of choices depending on the cadet's aptitude and talent to meet the various demands of professionals within the Army.
"€œIntroduction of double major system"
Along with a major selected by cadets, they have to complete a major in military studies course that has been selected as a measure to establish the professionalism of the Army.


Military studies major course require the completion of 37 credits in total with 12 subjects and 33 credits including Korean war history, world war history, weapon system, military geography and meteorology, future information war, defensive engineering, war game, military strategy, North Korean Studies, military ethics, military law, national defense management and 2 elective subjects out of 10 subjects including international relations, military revolution, civil military relations. Military studies enable cadets to be equipped with basic military knowledge and foster cadets' potentiality as a mlitary expert in the field of military theory education, hostile view and mlitary science. Under this system, cadets would acquire double degrees in 2 majors upon graduation.
