In commemoration of the 50th anniversary, it was selected in 1996 and is widely used in school events and promotion. Hwang-I is a half-human, half-animal mascot which combines the appearances of the lion, the school's symbolic animal and that of a cadet in ceremonial dress. The lion's mane is green after the school's traditioal colors and the graduation ring on its clenched fist was drawan to shed a lucid, brilliant light. In addition, the powerfully clenched fist signifies whole-hearted devotion to the country and its confident pose and thumbs-up signal represents the conviction with which cadets will fulfill their roles as leaderes and strong-willed guardians of the nation. The radiance from the ring on its left hand signifies the objective and the ability to look beyond the horizon towards a greater world.
